There are so many reasons that make Chicago the best city to live in, but the dog friendly beaches are at the top of our list. (We’re a little biased). There’s just nothing like watching your dog frolic in the lake with the sun shining and the sand beneath your feet.
Before you pack up your towel and sunscreen, here’s everything you need to know about Chicago’s two dog friendly beaches!
Montrose Harbor Dog Beach
Located at the north end of Montrose Beach in Uptown, Montrose Harbor Dog Beach is the only off-leash beach in the Chicago for dogs. The area is *mostly* fenced, so you’ll still want to make sure your pups’ recall skills are up to date. The Dog Beach is open during all regular Chicago Park District hours, 6:00 A.M. to 11 P.M.
Belmont Harbor Dog Beach
This beach is smaller but it is completely enclosed. As a result of its smaller footprint, this beach can get crowded on summer weekends!
Know Before You Go:
#1 – Work on Recall
Recall is your dog’s ability to return to you when called and is one of the most important skills to teach your pup. The world around him is rich with stimulation and triggers, so your ability to get his attention and have him come back to you is imperative!
#2 – Make Sure Your Dog’s Vaccinations are Up to Date
It’s so much easier to vaccinate now than have to treat a disease later, so be sure to talk with your veterinarian about the yearly vaccines your pup needs. The most common vaccinations are:
#3 – Be Sure to Register Your Pup with the City of Chicago
All dogs in Chicago must be registered, and you need your proof of registration at all Chicago dog friendly areas. To obtain your registration, your dog must be up to date on his rabies vaccination. Register here.
Have fun in the sun this summer, friends!
